How Swift it Flies!

The ball lifted high like a bird in flight

and then landed gently out of sight.

“How swift it flies” was the thought of the golfer -

as the stroke briefly impressed both he and his partner.

It was a pretty good shot as far as the eye could tell,

gliding by trees, water and sand, beyond a tapering swell.

Soon, they were on the green where the real work begins.

A careful strategy was quickly made to guide the ball to the pin.

The golfer muttered softly what every golfer must know:

driving is for the show, putting is for the dough.

A careful aim was made to a point just to the right of the flag.

A silent prayer was offered that one putt would put it in the bag.

The dimpled orb fell short of its mark and its goal

and kissed the cup as it drifted by the very small hole.

The heavens wept and angels moaned

and from mortal lips came soft but audible groans.

The golfer was clearly robbed, the ball should have dropped.

It was noted that it must have been the “east wind” that caused such a flop.

Excuses can be found aplenty in this game.

Every contest has several, most unworthy and often very lame.

Sometimes the ball is headed straight for the pin

and then hits the edge of the hole and “lips out”, without going in.

Once in a while the ball will go in sideways or from the back

and makes the putt look like skill, instead of just dumb luck.

The goal is to take those excuses and turn them back around,

Find the light at the end of the tunnel and don't let it get you down.

Thus ended another round of golf with some pars, bogeys and worse,

but it was a great day of golf with nary a swear word or curse.

The scenery was beautiful, the time together was awesome -

soon the score would be forgotten.

They all laughed at this parting comment with a friendly smirk:

“a bad day of golf still beats a good day at work.”
